VerDuS SURF Pop Up 2018 open: project proposals wanted for knowledge and innovation for cities

13 July 2018

The instrument VerDuS SURF Pop Up is intended for small projects that contribute to developing knowledge and innovation in cities and urban regions. NWO published the latest call for VerDuS SURF Pop Up on 12 July 2018. Researchers can apply for funding for small, short-term projects on behalf of a consortium. The deadline for submitting proposals is 27 September 2018.

VerDuS SURF (Smart Urban Regions for the Future) Pop Up is a response to the need for knowledge about new developments in urban regions and ad hoc questions within the SURF themes. The knowledge development within VerDuS SURF ties in with the five societal challenges at the interfaces of spatial planning, housing, accessibility, economy and governance.

Proposals in the area of the societal challenges formulated in the programme “Housing and the built environment” and “Economy” as well as the complex spatial coherency in the developments of the societal challenges are particularly welcome. A proposal can focus on innovative scientific research, but the funding can also be used for knowledge transfer, the development of a tool or another way of making the research applicable. Researchers can apply for funding for small, short-term projects on behalf of a consortium that contains at least one knowledge institution and one public or private partner.

After the submission deadline, a selection procedure will take place in which the proposals received will be assessed in competition with each other. The aim is to inform applicants about the funding decision within about 10 to 12 weeks after the submission deadline (mid-December 2018). The budget reserved for this funding round is 300,000 euros. Based on the experiences from 2017, several changes have been implemented in the procedure this year. The most important changes for applicants are stated on the funding page under “Further information” and in the call brochure.
It is expected that several rounds for VerDuS SURF Pop Up will be organised in 2019, subject to changes in the instrument based on the recommendations from the mid-term evaluation of SURF that will take place on 2018.

VerDuS SURF Pop Up is part of the Smart Urban Regions for the Future (SURF)  programme, which is in turn part of the knowledge initiative Connecting Sustainable Cities (VerDuS). VerDuS is an initiative of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, NWO, Platform31 and the Taskforce for Applied Research (NRPO SIA) in the field of smart urban regions. The VerDuS SURF programme consists of projects of various magnitudes that contribute to the livability of urban regions and in which there is much attention for knowledge utilisation and connecting society, science and policy.
