Open competition across NWO Domain Science to start in 2018 – current funding instruments close 1st of May 2018

6 November 2017

From 1 August 2018 onwards, researchers will be able to submit proposals for two new funding instruments of the NWO Domain Science. Within this open competition there will soon be two domain-wide instruments for innovative and curiosity-driven fundamental research: one instrument for small-scale projects and investments and one for large-scale projects. Current funding instruments in the open competition close the 1st of May 2018.

The NWO Domain Science Board has made extra funds available to ensure that this transition takes place as smoothly as possible and has initiated a transition regulation for the current funding instruments. This change fits within the NWO-wide simplification of the package of funding instruments, but only applies to the NWO Domain Science.

During the course of 2018, the text of the call for proposals and the application forms for all these new funding instruments will become available via the NWO website. Grants will be awarded from 2019 onwards.

Transition from old to new funding instruments

There is a transition regulation for the current funding instruments in the open competition of the NWO Domain Science.
The calls for the ALW Open Programme and Physics Projectruimte will remain open for continuous submission until 1 May 2018.
The call for CW TOP/ECHO will reopen shortly and EW TOP1&2 is now open – both calls for continuous submission until 1 May 2018.
Also the call Scientific Infrastructure for Astronomy, ICT and Mathematics (WI-AIW), previously known under the name Investment Grant NWO Medium Physical Sciences is open. The the deadline for submitting proposals for this call is 30 January 2018.
And finally in 2018 one more round of the Physics Vrije Programma's will take place. The exact deadline of this is not known but the pre-proposal phase will not close before the end of February 2018.
For all of the 'old' funding instruments stated here, the grants will be awarded in 2018. The texts for the call for proposals for these instruments are already available or will be made available very soon via the NWO website.

NWO will simplify research funding instruments

During the course of 2018, NWO will implement a simplified set of funding instruments in all its domains. From 1 August 2018 onwards, researchers will be able to submit proposals for the first calls published in accordance with this new model. With this measure, the NWO Executive Board intends to create a higher degree of clarity in the research funding and a better connection between the domains for multidisciplinary research proposals.

These intended changes emerge from the objectives for a modernised NWO in which it is easier to work across disciplinary boundaries. For the time being, the new funding instruments of NWO cover four categories: talent, open project funding, open programme funding, and strategic funding. Each category will contain a limited number of funding instruments (such as Veni, Vidi and Vici in the category talent) and will have a modular structure. NWO and ZonMw will further elaborate the details of the new system in the coming months.
For each funding instrument, the boards of the NWO domains AES, Science, SSH, and Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, future domain of NWO, will decide which modules this will consist of and which portfolio of instruments they will make available for their domain, with due consideration for the character and needs of the research field.
The simplification within the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development concerns only the programmes financed by NWO and as such do not affect the mainly thematic programmes. Via the websites, NWO and ZonMw will announce changes to the current instruments at least six months before these are effected.
