Extra boost for graphene research in 2nd FLAG-ERA Joint Transnational Call

New funding for projects led by four NWO scientists

19 December 2017

Twenty-three international teams of scientists will receive a total of EUR 14m from FLAG-ERA (the European Flagship ERA-NET) for research to be carried out in synergy with the Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project. In that connection NWO will provide funding for projects led by four Dutch researchers under the umbrella of the Graphene Flagship: Srijit Goswami (Delft University of Technology), Michel de Jong (University of Twente), Mikhail Katsnelson (Radboud University) and Gunnar Seide (Maastricht University).

The projects – H2O, GRANSPORT, GraSage and TopoGraph – will receive funding within the Basic Research topic: Graphene. NWO will contribute a total of over EUR 1m to these four projects within the ERA-NET.

FLAG-ERA is the European ERA-NET of funding agencies that supports the two Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagships: Graphene and The Human Brain Project. FLAG-ERA organised a second European Transnational Call in the spring of 2017. The projects that were awarded funding in the Call for Graphene all complement the research already taking place within the Graphene Flagship. The goal is to facilitate an optimum connection with the nationally funded research in that area.

The following four projects to be funded:

Heterostructures of 2D Materials and Organic Semiconductor Nanolayers
University of Twente: Michel de Jong
A collaboration between Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden

Correlations and defects in graphene and related materials: Charge and heat transport
Radboud University / Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM): Mikhail Katsnelson
A collaboration between the Netherlands, Germany, France and Sweden.

Modelling of the electrical and thermal transport mechanisms in graphene nano-odified polymer compounds and fibres
Maastricht University, Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM): Gunnar Seide
A collaboration between the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Spain

Engineering topological superconductivity in graphene
Delft University of Technology / QuTech: Srijit Goswami
Collaboration between Hungary, Spain and the Netherlands.
