Wiro Niessen new Board member NWO Domain AES

29 November 2017

Prof.dr. Wiro Niessen becomes member of the Board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences. Together with the other members of the AES Board, he will contribute to the position of AES within NWO and in the Dutch science field.

Wiro Niessen

The Board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) welcomes prof.dr. Wiro Niessen as new board member. Niessen joins the AES board on 1 January 2018, succeeding Ton van der Steen as a Board member.

Niessen is a professor of Biomedical Image Processing at Erasmus MC and at Delft University of Technology. His research focuses on computer systems that can recognize cardiovascular diseases and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Niessen has also set up a company called Quantib. The company develops software for automatic image analysis.

Simon Stevin Master

In 2015 Niessen received the Simon Stevin Master Prize from Technology foundation STW (now NWO Domain AES), for his contribution to the rapid development that medical image analysis has taken. Next to that, STW praised him for building bridges between science and clinic. In this way he brings knowledge outside the academic world, so that society can profit optimally.

Driven

'I am very pleased with Wiro Niessen's appointment to the Board,' says AES board chairman Jaap Schouten. 'Wiro is an enthusiastic and driven scientist. In addition, he has a large network and the necessary managerial experience in the medical-technical field. He also has a clear vision of the do's and don'ts of funding for technical-scientific research.’ From next year, Wiro will contribute to the position of AES within NWO and in the scientific field in the Netherlands, says Schouten. 'I look forward to it with great pleasure.'

Career

Wiro Niessen studied physics at Utrecht University, where he obtained his Msc degree cum laude and - also cum laude - obtained his PhD on Medical Imaging. He did part of his research in America, including at Yale University. At the University Medical Center Utrecht he led research groups in cardiovascular image analysis and image guided interventions. Since 2005, Niessen has been a professor at Erasmus MC and at Delft University of Technology. In 2017 he was elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
