NWO awards 36 prestigious Vici grants

Grants of 1.5 million euros for leading scientists

12 February 2015

36 excellent scientists have received a Vici grant of 1.5 million euros from NWO. The funding will enable the laureates to do research for the next five years and to build up their own research group. Vici is one of the largest grants for individual scientists in the Netherlands and is part of NWO's Talent Scheme.

The Vici grants are awarded by NWO on a science-wide basis. The laureates will do research, for example, into a flexible robot suit that supports people with a paralysis during walking, mysterious destruction rituals in prehistoric times, and a never-ending atomic laser which must result in the ultimate atomic clock.

Curiosity-driven research

Within Vici, researchers are free to nominate their own research project for funding. For the 2014 funding round a total of 216 scientists submitted a pre-proposal and 132 of the applicants submitted a full proposal. Of these, 36 have now been awarded funding, which means an award rate of 17 percent.

Vici is part of NWO's Talent Scheme, which consists of the Veni, Vidi and Vici grants. With this scheme NWO encourages scientific talent by offering scientists in various stages of their career the opportunity to do groundbreaking research. The Vici grant is a boost for the laureates and it also creates opportunities for a large number of young researchers who will work in the laureates’ research groups.

Selection of the best proposals

The Vici grants are awarded each year by NWO. Every proposal is reviewed by several invited scientists from each applicant's discipline to ensure that the best proposals are selected. Committees of renowned scientists from various disciplines subsequently compare all of the proposals and interview the applicants. During the selection of proposals, the assessors considered the quality of the researcher, the innovative character of the proposed research, its scientific impact and the knowledge utilisation.
