22 January 2015

NWO has awarded a total of 1.4 million euros to five projects within the Joint Scientific Thematic Research Programme (JSTP) – Smart Energy in Smart Cities funding round. In the projects researchers from China and the Netherlands will collaborate in the area of sustainable urban development or smart solutions for more efficient energy use and energy saving in cities.

The JSTP programme is a joint research programme of China and the Netherlands and for this the Ministry of Education Culture and Science, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and NWO work together with the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (MoST), the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (MoE), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The aim is to facilitate long-term collaboration between researchers from both countries. The funding for the joint research projects is intended for research areas in which both the Netherlands and China excel with the aim of supplementing each other's expertise. Each year a different theme is chosen for which research groups can apply for funding. The theme for the 2014 funding round was 'Smart Energy in Smart Cities'.
