Professor Beatrice de Graaf and professor Alexander Rinnooy Kan have been appointed as chairs for the National Science Agenda. Under the leadership of these chairs a National Research Agenda will be realised on behalf of the Dutch Cabinet that will bring together the separate agendas of science, industry and society and will make choices for research themes where important developments can be expected over the next ten years. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science announced this today in a press release.

NWO is pleased about the appointment of these chairs. Professor Jos Engelen, chair of NWO, and also a member of the steering group Dutch National Research Agenda: 'An outstanding choice. The two chairs appointed have the experience, authority and appropriate background to make connections across the boundaries of disciplines and universities. And by doing this they will be able to come up with research themes that are supported by science, industry and society.'

In the 2025 Vision for Science Choices for the Future, the Dutch Cabinet asked the Knowledge coalition to take the initiative for a National Research Agenda. The appointment of De Graaf and Rinnooy Kan is at the recommendation of this Knowledge coalition, which is made up of the universities (Association of Universities in the Netherlands), the universities of applied sciences (Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, NWO, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers, the Large Technological Institutions (TO2) and Royal Association MKB-Nederland.

The Vision for Science allocated the coordination of the secretariat of the National Science Agenda to NWO. A few weeks ago Dr Henk Molenaar, secretary of the National Research Agenda, started to appoint staff from the various members of the Knowledge coalition to the secretariat.
