Announcement NWO Spinoza Laureates on Friday 6 June

Granting of highest award in Dutch science

26 May 2014

On Friday 6 June, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will announce which scientists have been awarded the NWO Spinoza Prize 2014. The Prize of 2.5 million euros, to be spent on scientific research, is the highest award in Dutch science. After registration, members of the press are welcome to attend the announcement of the prize at the Media Plaza in Utrecht.

NWO awards the NWO Spinoza Prize each year to three or four researchers working in the Netherlands who according to international standards belong to the absolute top of science. The NWO Spinoza laureates do outstanding, pioneering research and they are a source of inspiration for younger researchers.

Opportunity for interviews with the NWO Spinoza laureates

At 16.00 hours, NWO chair Jos Engelen will announce who the NWO Spinoza laureates are. From 17.00 hours onwards the laureates will be available for interviews and photos. Requests for interviews can be sent to the Information and Communication Department of NWO (see below for practical information).

The announcement is part of the annual NWO event for science and press Bessensap.

About the NWO Spinoza Prize

Scientists can be nominated for the NWO Spinoza Prize (for example, by rectors of universities). An international committee assesses the candidates nominated. The NWO Spinoza Prize is a recognition of the proven quality of the scientists concerned and a stimulus to expand their excellent research. The NWO Spinoza Prize was first awarded in 1995. The Netherlands now has 69 Spinoza laureates.

Please consult NWO's website for further information about all laureates since 1995 or about the NWO Spinoza Prize.

Awards ceremony

On 9 September 2014, the festive award ceremony for the NWO Spinoza Prizes will be held in the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague. Laureates will then receive their prize and will present their research as well as their plans for the coming years.
