Physics with Industry - workshop

Since 2010 NWO organises, in collaboration with the Lorentz Center, the ‘Physics with Industry’ workshops. The aim of this workshop is for young physicists to create original solutions for industrial problems, for them to get introduced to industrial R&D and for companies to get in touch with young talents. This contributes to an innovative research community in the Netherlands.

Upcoming edition – Physics with Industry 2019

From 18 to 22 November 2019 NWO and the Lorentz Center are holding the tenth edition of the Physics with Industry (PwI) workshop, in which PhD students and postgraduate researchers spend a week working intensively on challenging physics cases put forward by the business community and social organisations.
Participants will receive a certificate with 48 study-hours which your graduate school may turn into ECTS (please check the possibilities with your graduate school). Participants of the workshop are physicists from academia in the Netherlands and Europe, and researchers of the participating companies. They will work in teams with each team focusing on one of the selected industrial cases. The majority of the participants are PhD students or postdocs. The scientists are supported by senior researchers, to ensure progress and the highest scientific quality.

Important dates

  • Industrial/social case submission deadline: 14 May 2019
  • Participant registration deadline: 24 September 2019
  • Company/organisation visit: 14 or 15 November 2019
  • Physics with Industry workshop: 18 - 22 November 2019

Participating as a researcher

The workshop is intended for PhD students and postgraduate researchers working in physics and applied physics. PhD students and Researchers who would like to participate in this year's Physics with Industry workshop, can apply this summer. Link for registration follows once the registration is open. Would you like to be notified in advance? Send an email to Registration will close on 24 September 2019.

Participation is free of charge. In return, this requires full attendance to the whole workshop. After selection, we require a written confirmation of your attendance (for PhD students this needs to be signed by your supervisor).

Participating as a company

Companies can register for the 2019 Physics with Industry workshop until 14 May 2019, by sending an email to For more information and conditions, see the appendix at the bottom of this page: Physics with Industry 2019 | Call for companies.
The participating companies will be announced by the end of June.

Lorentz Center in Leiden.
The Lorentz Center is a Dutch international workshop center. It organises workshops in the full spectrum of scientific disciplines, aiming to promote innovative research at the scientific frontiers as well as on complex societal challenges. The focus is on stimulating collaboration between communities, also from outside academia.

Workshop preparation

Participants can indicate their preference for a case during registration. Before the start of the workshop the PWI organisation assigns each participant to one case, so that in the end teams are formed consisting of approx. 10 people (including the company representatives and the sr scientist). The participants may receive relevant literature and other documents, so that they can start the workshop with relevant background knowledge. On 14 or 15 November a company visit takes place. At the start of the workshop, participants are requested to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) (see document Groud rules at Enclosures).

On the website of the Lorentz Center you can find an impression of the previous PWI edition (2017) with the cases back then. The reports of Physics with Industry 2010 up to 2017 are available as pdf-file (see below). The report of Physics with Industry 2018 will be published online soon.

Experiences from companies participating in previous PWI editions:
"Physics with Industry was a real inspirational event for us. Bringing together young researchers from different fields of research and more experienced researchers from universities and industrial R&D was the best you can expect for working on your very specific subject. It helped us a lot to understand the limits of our approach of the problem, but also the good choices we made in treating the subject. Physics with Industry was for me a place where the fundamental research met the industrial application within a framework where the innovation was at home."
