Speed dates

Speed date @DutchBiophysics 2019

As last year, talented researchers from academia have the opportunity to ‘speed date’ with one of our industry partners or with an expert in science communication.

Why speed date?

The speed date session is an interesting opportunity to:

  1. broaden your network of industrial relations;
  2. pitch your research ideas to potential partner(s);
  3. discuss career opportunities;
  4. learn more about communication to society.

Information about the speed date partners

confocal.nl is a spin-off company from the University of Amsterdam, where the Rescan Confocal Microscope was developed by the team of Erik Manders. The RCM is a laser scanning confocal system with a modular design, making confocal technology affordable by using simple components and allowing upgrade of existing wide-field microscopes. The RCM module can be coupled to any type of inverted microscope via C-mount, and uses a C-mount coupled camera as a detector. By using camera-based detection, the RCM has an improved sensitivity, with a signal-to-noise ratio that is up to 3x better than a standard PMT-based confocal system. The rescan principle offers a lateral resolution improvement of 1.4x, up to 170nm, without any post-processing being required. In combination with a limited number of user-settings, this makes the RCM a very user-friendly system, accessible to anyone without extensive microscopy experience.

LUMICKS has come to market as the supplier of instruments for dynamic single-molecule research – a rapidly evolving niche in the biophysics research field. Our high-performance instruments allow for the investigation into the fundamental cause of disease and potential for drug optimization. With our tools researchers can visualize and quantify the interactions between biomolecules in real-time, and perform high-throughput screening of molecular interactions using sound waves.
We offer the chance to be part of an important mission: To improve human health by unlocking dynamic single-molecule and cell avidity analysis. With an ever-increasing adoption of our technologies by leading institutes from all over the world, including UC Berkeley, Max-Planck, Rockefeller University and ShanghaiTech, LUMICKS is now expanding its team.

Meet us at the speed date session to have 1-1 discussions with our application scientists and see how it is to work in a fast-growing high-tech company making a true impact on science.

Explaining science to society: 1-on-1 session with an expert in science communication
Need some advice on how to handle the media? Would you like to know more about the do’s and dont’s when communicating science to the general public? Do you need tips on how to use social media?
One of our NWO domain Science communicators will be more than happy to answer your questions and to advise you.

NWO - domain Science (Varsha Karpoerchan)

You all probably know NWO as the grant organisation and the organisor of events such as DutchBiophysics, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to work at NWO? At NWO the policy officers all have a scientific background and have made the switch from the lab to policy making. Curious about the opportunities at NWO and what kind of work we fill our days with? Come talk to us at the speed date!

For more information about the speed dating sessions, please contact the organisation by email at biophysics@nwo.nl.
