Take-off

Take-off, the funding instrument available to all scientific fields, encourages activity and entrepreneurship within the Dutch knowledge institutions. With this instrument, academic entrepreneurs – but also starters from universities of applied sciences (HBO) and starters who are making use of knowledge from institutions for Applied Research Organisations (TO2) – can bring their innovative research results to the market. Take-off is one of the instruments for knowledge utilisation which NWO implements together with ZonMw (The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development).

Purpose

Valuable research results sometimes threaten to go unused because knowledge and innovations must endure a difficult path to the market. Financing is needed to bridge the divide between the research and the market. The programme Take-off bridges this funding gap in the early phase of an undertaking.

The aim of Take-off is to create innovative activity based on the knowledge development and utilisation by researchers at knowledge institutions. This activity can be about product, process, care or service innovation in the broadest sense of the word and within all scientific areas – from exact science and technology or life sciences to the humanities and social/behavioural sciences.

Take-off consists of two components:

  1. Feasibility studies (phase 1) – maximum length: 6 months
  2. Early stage routes (phase 2) – maximum length: 24 months

Who can apply

Funding for academic (WO) starters

For academic starters, it is possible to request financing through the instruments ‘Take-off WO phase 1’ and ‘Take-off phase 2: early stage routes (WO, HBO and TO2)’. These programmes are implemented by the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences.

Funding for HBO starters

For HBO starters, it is possible to request financing through the instrument ‘Take-off HBO phase 1: feasibility studies’. This programme is implemented by the SIA Task force for Applied Research (Nationaal Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA). HBO starters can also submit a request at 'Take-off phase 2: early stage routes (WO, HBO and TO2)', a programme which is implemented by the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences.

Funding for innovative starters with TO2 knowledge

For innovative starters with TO2 knowledge, it is possible to request financing through the instrument ‘Take-off TO2 phase 1: feasibility studies’. A submission can also be made to the programme 'Take-off phase 2: early stage routes (WO, HBO and TO2)'. Both programmes are implemented by the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences.

What to apply for

Feasibility study

For a feasibility study, researchers within Take-off can request financing of EUR 20,000 to a maximum of EUR 40,000. This loan can be used to perform a feasibility study of the commercial application of innovative ideas and the start of activity on the basis of knowledge innovations from knowledge institutions. A feasibility study leads to a report which includes the possibilities of a start-up.

Early stage route

With Take-off early stage routes, companies (start-ups) which have just been initiated by researchers or entrepreneurs can request a loan of 50,000 euros to a maximum of 250,000 euros. The loan is utilised for the early stage route with a maximum term of two (2) years. Interest is owed on the loan, which must be repaid within eight (8) years. An early stage route consists of the steps which are necessary to make a knowledge innovation commercially viable. This could be a production process, market research, or a marketing or financing plan. This enables the entrepreneur to approach other private or public parties at the end of this route for investment in the continuation of the project.

When to apply

The funding instrument Take-off has two rounds annually for the request of financing for starters – a spring and an autumn round. The spring round opens in January and closes in March; the autumn round starts in June and closes at the beginning of October.
