Human Measurement Models 2.0: for health research on diseases and prevention

NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES), the Association of Collaborating Health Foundations (SGF), ZonMw and Top Sector Life Sciences & Health (LSH; Health~Holland) together make 5.55 million euros available for the development and validation of human measurement models. Through public-private partnerships within the research programme a contribution is made to science that becomes more effective for human and is less dependent on laboratory animals.

NWO’s policy towards funding and the impact of the coronavirus

As a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus, NWO has drafted a guideline to provide applicants with clarity. NWO takes into consideration that under these circumstances it is not always possible that all candidates have an equal opportunity to submit their applications and it is important that we are confident when evaluating applications that we are doing so correctly.

Please note deadline shifts: The schedule for this entire round has been postponed by two months compared to the original schedule.

For more information about measures for upcoming rounds, and updates on this temporary guideline go to nwo.nl/corona-en.

Purpose

The overall aim of the programme Human measurement models is to facilitate the development of new, more efficient human measurement models for health research to ensure that research results can be applied better and faster in humans. The focus of the current call is to develop innovative human measurement models for disease research or the prevention of diseases, including toxicity studies. The results from health research and any
developed model has to be applicable for multiple diseases, and has to have an impact for multiple patient groups.

Who can apply

Funding can be requested by experienced researchers who hold a PhD and who are appointed at a Dutch university or a research institute recognised by NWO. Co-applicants are also researchers who hold a PhD with an appointment at a Dutch university or a research institution recognised by NWO. Collaboration between at least two researchers from different research disciplines and at least 4 users of which 2 for profit enterprises is required for submission.

The minimum compulsory contribution from for profit enterprises depends on the type of research that is being carried out and can be provided by several parties together

What to apply for

The maximum funding that can be requested for a project is 1.000.000 euro (inclusive of Dutch VAT). The typical project duration may range from 2 to 4 years, with a maximum of 4 years. This budget can be utilised for:

  • Personell costs
  • Material costs and foreign travel costs
  • Investments

Management, administration and accountability of projects will take place according to NWO Domain AES procedures and according to the requirements of the PPP Allowance awarded to NWO Domain AES by Top Sector LSH on behalf of SGF with respect to substantive and financial reporting. For more information see the Call for proposals

When to apply

  • The submission deadline has been postponed. NWO will publish the revised round planning before 6 April (or later if the date for the measures taken by the government shifts).

Assessment

Criteria

  • The project should have a high utilisation potential and contribute to the mission statements of the partners
  • The research should contribute to the objectives of the programme human measurement models and fit in the research roadmap of Top Sector LSH as outlined in the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda 2020-2023 'Health & Care'
  • Animal models are only allowed for validation purposes and research has to comply with the conditions described in the call for proposals
  • There is a minimum co-financing requirement and all consortium partners must contribute to the total project costs.
  • The application must fall within the criteria for using the PPP allowance of the Top Sector LSH as stated in the Call for proposals.
  • The work packages within the application must fall within the criteria for fundamental or industrial research, or experimental development according to the PPP definitions for type of research of Top Sector LSH.
  • Within projects, Partnership-specific agreements must be made in the field of Intellectual Property according to the consortium project agreement.

Procedure

The proposals will be assessed by (international) referees and by an independent committee on scientific quality and utilisation. The assessment committee will advise on which proposals should receive funding. This advice will be presented to the board of SGF and ZonMW after which the NWO Domain AES Board will decide in December 2020.
