VerDuS SURF Pop Up 2019, 2nd round

Researchers can, on behalf of a consortium, apply for funding for a small project that addresses the societal challenges formulated in the programme Smart Urban Regions of the Future (VerDuS SURF).

The VerDuS SURF programme is part of the knowledge initiative Connecting Sustainable Cities (kennisinitiatief Verbinden van Duurzame Steden, VerDuS ). Goal of the programme is to develop knowledge that will contribute to solving urban problems. In VerDuS SURF, researchers and knowledge users collaborate closely to achieve this.

The Board of Directors of Connecting Sustainable Cities wishes to facilitate small, bottom-up initiatives to address new questions and developments within the thematics considered in VerDuS SURF. The aim of these small projects is to improve the quality and relevance of the VerDuS SURF-programme by filling the gaps.

Who can apply

Applications can be submitted on behalf of consortia with at least one researcher affiliated with the knowledge institutions mentioned below (the main applicant) and at least one public or private partner. Researchers from the following knowledge institutions can submit applications:

  • Dutch universities
  • KNAW- and NWO institutes;
  • Universities of applied sciences (hogescholen);
  • TO2 institutes (including TNO).

Public or private parties can not apply for funding, but can be part of a consortium.

What to apply for

A VerDuS SURF Pop Up project can have a duration of maximum 12 months; there is no minimum duration. Projects must start within three months after funding is awarded. Other parties contribute to the project with in cash or in kind cofinancing. Applications can be submitted with a total budget of maximum 50,000 euro, including requested funding plus cofinancing. Personnel costs as well as material costs can be applied for.

When to apply

In 2019, two rounds of VerDuS SURF Pop Up will take place. The deadline for this second round of applications was on 26 September, 14.00 CE(S)T. This will be the final round of VerDuS SURF Pop Up.

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  1. Quality of the application (40%)
  2. Relevance and contribution to the VerDuS SURF programme (40%)
  3. Finances ('value for money') (20%)

An elaboration of these criteria can be found in the call for proposals.

Applications that meet the requirements for applying will be assessed by the Programme Comittee SURF. Seeing as VerDuS SURF Pop Up is aimed at funding short term projects with a relatively small budget, no external referees are consulted in this procedure.

Each application will be assessed by the Programme Committee SURF based on the three set assessment criteria. After this, each application will receive a qualification and a ranking will be made based on quality. The Programme Committee SURF will then formulate a funding recommendation for the Board of Directors of Connecting Sustainable Cities, who will make the ultimate funding decision.

NWO aims to inform applicants about the outcome of the assessment procedure within ten weeks after a deadline. This means that results are planned to be published at the end of December 2019.
