Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Vici - Health Research and Medical Sciences

The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Vici is a grant for senior researchers.

Purpose

Vici is a funding instrument from the Talent Scheme. It gives senior researchers the opportunity to build up their own research group, often in anticipation of a tenured professorship. The research group must become structurally embedded in the research institution.

Who can apply

Vici is targeted at outstanding senior researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers. Researchers who have obtained their PhD within the last 15 years can apply for a Vici grant. There may be a possibility of an extension in some cases like care responsibilities and/or training in a clinical specialism. A link to specialised training eligible for extension can be found here. Please consult the frequently asked questions on our website (Link-FAQ) for further details.

A researcher can submit a maximum of three Vici preproposals throughout his/her career.

What can be applied for

The maximum grant is 1.5 million euros.

When to apply

  • Submission deadline for the 2019 round (pre-proposals) was 26 March 2019, 14:00:00 hrs (CET)
  • Closing date for the submission of full proposals was 27 August 2019 14:00:00 hrs (CEST)

When you submit your application to ISAAC/Mijn ZonMw you need to enter several additional details online. Be aware that ZonMw applications are in a different format than of other domains. A larger part of the application must be entered online. An example of the digital form can be found here. We strongly advise you to start applying at least a day week before the deadline. Applications that are submitted after the deadline will not be included in the procedure.

Assessment

All Vici applications are assessed in a nationwide competition.

Criteria

The assessment criteria are:

  • quality of the researcher
  • quality, innovative character and academic impact of the research proposal
  • knowledge utilisation

Procedure

The assessment procedure of the 2019 Vici round aligns with NWO’s new organisational structure. Starting this Vici call, there will no longer be a separate committee for cross-domain proposals. The Vici competition will be assessed by four committees: four committees corresponding to the NWO domains : Social Sciences and Humanities (SGW), NWO-Science domain (ENW), Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW),  Health Research and Development (ZonMw).

Vici applications are assessed in a domain-wide competition: all applications from different disciplines within one domain will be compared in one competition. The domains use broad-based assessment committees of academics to advise on the merits and prioritisation of the applications.

Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal. These are assessed by one of the four assessment committees, which then makes a recommendation on whether or not to submit a full proposal. Full proposals are sent to external referees. Applicants are given the opportunity to respond to the referees’ reports (‘rebuttal’). Next, the full proposals, the reviews and the rebuttals are assessed by the respective assessment committees. They invite a selection of the candidates for an interview. Based on the application, the referees’ reports, the rebuttal and the interview the assessment committee advises the accredited board of NWO.

All proposals to the Health Research and Development domain (ZonMw) must be submitted by Mijn ZonMw.
