Cooperation Germany - von Humboldt Stiftung (VHS)

Each year NWO makes two prizes available to senior German researchers who are nominated by Dutch researchers. The Von Humboldt Stiftung (VHS) in Bonn makes two prizes available for senior Dutch researchers.

Purpose

The aim of the research prizes is to encourage international collaboration between excellent researchers.

Who can apply

Eminent researchers (preferably professors) with a tenured position at one of the knowledge institutions listed below can nominate German candidates for a Von Humboldt Prize to NWO: Dutch universities, KNAW institutes, NWO institutes, NKI, MPI Nijmegen, researchers from the Dubble beamline at the ESRF in Grenoble, NCB Naturalis, and the Advanced Research Centre for NanoLithography (ARCNL). German researchers can nominate Dutch candidates to the Von Humboldt Stiftung.

The winners must satisfy substantial requirements. They must be at the top of their career and be in a leadership position, preferably as a professor. They must enjoy an outstanding international scientific reputation. And they must still be able to make a genuine contribution to science.

A researcher can only receive this Prize once. In view of the Prize’s aim, it should not be combined with other prizes and stays. Scientists who in view of their scientific achievements have already received a prize in the past year will not be eligible for this Prize.

On the date the nomination is received, candidates may not have been in the Netherlands for more than six months. If a person has been in the Netherlands for between six and twelve months then this person may no longer be staying in the Netherlands at the moment of nomination. If a person has been in the Netherlands for at least twelve months then he or she must have been outside of the Netherlands for at least one year before he/she can be nominated.

What to apply for

The Prize can be requested for research for a period of at least four months and at most one year. The research period can be split up if so desired. The following costs are reimbursed:

  • subsistence costs for the research period,
  • international travel costs (one return ticket),
  • associated research costs (including congress visit and travel within the Netherlands).

When to apply

You may submit at any time. There are no deadlines. The processing time is about six months.

Nominations can be submitted until the reserved budget for the programmes Visitor’s Travel Grant, Cooperation Germany - Von Humboldt Stiftung, Cooperation Japan, Cooperation Taiwan and Cooperation China travel grants and seminars has been exhausted.

Assessment

Criteria

Applications will be assessed on the basis of:

  • Scientific quality, originality and relevance of the research programme
  • Quality of the researcher
  • Knowledge utilisation

Procedure

The Von Humboldt Stiftung selects the Dutch candidates and awards the research prizes to the Dutch researchers. NWO selects the German candidates and awards the research prizes to the German researchers.

In the case of an application for a visit of at most six months no external advice (peer review) is requested, in principle. For an application for a visit of between six and twelve months at least one external advice is requested. The NWO-wide grants committee assesses the applications and advises the NWO Governing Board about the award. The NWO Governing Board takes the award decision.
