PhDs in the Humanities

The aim of the PhDs in the Humanities funding instrument is to increase the number of young talented researchers in the humanities, and to facilitate their progression on the academic career ladder.

Purpose

PhDs in the Humanities offers talented researchers a paid PhD position. 

Who can apply

PhD candidates are selected by the dean of their faculty. Only faculties involved in Sustainable Humanities can nominate PhD candidates, namely:

  • Utrecht University
  • University of Amsterdam
  • University of Groningen
  • Erasmus University Rotterdam
  • VU University Amsterdam
  • Leiden University
  • Radboud University Nijmegen
  • Maastricht University
  • Tilburg University
  • Open University

The supervisor submits the application.

What to apply for

A grant can be applied for to cover a standard PhD research project (4 years, 1 fte or 5 years, 0.8 fte) or a PhD position for a lecturer (5 years, 0.5 fte). The grant covers the personnel costs of the PhD. Material costs for research are remunerated to a limited extent.

When to apply

Proposals for the next funding round must be submitted to NWO no later than 2 March 2017, 02:00 PM.

NWO in transition: changes funding instruments

On 1 January 2017, NWO will adopt a new organisation structure. Current funding instruments will remain unchanged until a decision about any change is taken. NWO will announce this change at least six months in advance. 2017 will be a transition year and the new funding instruments will become effective no later than 1 January 2018.
