Value from Biomass

Multidisciplinary consortia of academic researchers and companies can apply for funding for research into biomass conversion in a socially relevant context.

Purpose

This call focuses on the transition from an economy based on fossil resources to an economy that runs on sustainable alternatives. The aim of the call is to fund groundbreaking (fundamental) research that can provide socially relevant and responsible innovations in the field of biomass conversion. Project proposals should address both molecular and technological challenges and the social aspects of the biomass value chain. The NWO approach to Responsible Innovation (NWO-MVI) must be included in all proposals.

Who can apply

The main applicant is a researcher employed by a Dutch university or a research institute recognized by NWO. He/she represents a public-private consortium of at least one knowledge institute and one company. A consortium consists of at least two applicants with complementary expertise within the Exact and Natural Sciences Domain and the Social Sciences & Humanities Domain. Participating companies contribute to the research in cash and in kind. It should be clear at the time of the application that there is commitment from the participating companies.

What to apply for

The project size is between 500.000 euro and 900.000 euro, including matching of co-financing partners. The financing can be used, among other things, for the appointment of temporary academic staff, material costs (consumables), equipment and 'Money follows Cooperation'. See the Call text for more details.

When to apply

  • The deadline for submitting proposals was 13 June 2019, 14:00 hours CEST.

The Domain Board is expected to make its funding decision end of December 2019.
