National Roadmap Large-scale Research Infrastructure

The second call for proposals of the National Roadmap Large-Scale Research Infrastructure is intended to enable the 33 (clusters of) research infrastructure on the current National Roadmap to submit applications for funding.

Large-scale research infrastructure is vitally important for carrying out innovative scientific research. Additionally it plays an important role in boosting social and economic innovation.

Who can apply

Applications for funding can only be submitted by institutions or organisations with projects that have been included in current the National Roadmap for Large-Scale Research Infrastructure 2016-2020.

What to apply for

Large-scale Research Infrastructure (LSRI) can only be realised through a joint effort of all parties involved. Funding from the National Roadmap Large-Scale Research Infrastructurecan be used for:

Capital investments

  • The development and acquisition/construction of the intended LSRI or costs for a modification of the existing LSRI such that it can be used to realise scientific breakthroughs.

Running costs

  • These can be requested once for a maximum period of 5 years.

As a lower limit for the total size (capital investments + running costs) of the investment to be realised in the framework of this programme (NWO funds and co-funding together), a minimum amount of 10 million euros applies. Only one application for funding can be submitted per Roadmap LSRI. Funding can be requested for a maximum period of 10 years.

The Call for proposals gives a comprehensive overview of what can be requested.

When to apply

The deadline for submitting proposals was 4 June 2019, 14:00 hours CE(S)T.

The application will be assessed according to four criteria:

  1. Science and excellence case (weight 1/3 of the final score)
  2. Strategic case and innovation (weight 1/3 of the final score)
  3. Technical, business and management case (weight 1/6 of the final score)
  4. Financial case (weight 1/6 of the final score)

An independent committee appointed by NWO will assess all applications. The committee receives written comments from scientific experts (reviewers). Applicants can respond to these with a rebuttal that also counts towards the assessment. The committee will invite a number of proposals with a high chance of obtaining funding for an interview. During this interview the applicants explain their investment in greater detail.
