Energy System Integration: towards a future-proof, affordable, and reliable energy system (ESI-far)

Consortia of scientists and public/private parties can together request funding for innovative research in the area of energy system integration.

With this call for proposals, NWO is promoting public-private partnerships within scientifically innovative subjects in the area of energy system integration. For this an integrated view on the whole energy system is crucial. This call is part of the KIC 2018-2019 of the Topsector Energy

Who can apply

This call is aimed at alfa, beta/technology, and gamma-researchers.

Each application involves at least one public/private partner.

The main applicant is an experienced researcher with a PhD and a permanent or temporary contract at a Dutch university or other NWO-acknowledged institute, for at least the duration of the application and the project. See the call for exception for tenure trackers.

Researchers of TO2-institutes and universities of applied science can be co-applicant and can receive funding.

Private and/or public parties (such as ministries, energy cooperatives) provide 15% cofunding (in kind and/or in cash). NWO-acknowledged institutes, TO2-institutes and universities of applied science cannot provide cofunding.

What to apply for

The minimum project size is 2 full-time research positions (4-year PhD students, 3-year postdocs) at NWO-acknowledige institutes. The maximum size is 3 full-time positions. Additionally, the following standard NWO-budget modules can be requested:

  • Research leave
  • Material
  • Knowledge utilisation
  • Money follows Cooperation

Furthermore, each application requests 1.5 - 2.5 person years of eScience Research Engineer.

Additionally, max. 75,000 euros in personnel costs and max. 25,000 euros in material costs can be requested for personnel/material at universities of applied science.

Additionally, max. 146,461 euros in personnel costs and max. . 48,332 euros in material costs can be requested for personnel/material at TO2-institutes.
