Integrated Ocean Discovery Programme

The Integrated Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP) gives scientists the opportunity to participate in drilling expeditions and do research deep in the ocean floor. New locations for expeditions may also be proposed.

Dutch researchers can request ship time for participation in drilling expeditions on one of the IODP ships. The proposed research must strengthen Dutch participation in international research in the areas of paleoclimatology, plate tectonics and microorganisms.

Who can apply

Each IODP expedition has a scientific staff of at most 30 people. Participation in IODP expeditions is open to scientists, engineers and PhD students from IODP Member Countries, including the Netherlands.

What to apply for

You can submit a proposal for participation in an expedition via IOPD

Via IOPD Drilling Proposals you can submit a proposal for a new expedition.

When to apply

There are different closing dates per expedition. Proposals for new expeditions can be submitted each year.

IODP is responsible for the assessment of proposals for participation in expeditions. The IODP-SAS appoints selection panels made up of international experts. These panels select candidates on the basis of scientific quality and expertise. IODP is also responsible for the assessment of drilling proposals.

The proposals must focus on at least one of the following subjects:

  • plate tectonics
  • reconstruction of the paleoclimate
  • microorganisms
