The earth sciences are part of the NWO Domain Science (ENW). The Earth Sciences Roundtable is an important advisory body for the NWO Domain Science Board.
The working field covers processes in and around the Earth, oceans, atmosphere and biosphere. Research in all of these areas must provide an answer to societal challenges, such as the sustainable use of natural resources and issues with respect to climate change.
Stimulating and facilitating the Dutch earth sciences requires a strong connection with researchers, public partners and private partners in the field, for example by inviting them to take part in national meetings. A good connection with other organisational units of NWO and knowledge institutions is also vital.
NWO stimulates collaborations and strategic programmes within several top sectors that are relevant for the earth sciences and that align with the Dutch National Research Agenda. NWO is also involved in national and international developments and puts research on the European and global agendas, for example via European networks. Via various memberships, Dutch researchers gain access to European and global research infrastructure, such as participation in international drilling programmes, facilities in polar regions, and space instruments for Earth observation. Every year the earth sciences team organises the Netherlands Earth Science Congress NAC.
