Data management plan

Once an application has been awarded, the project leader is required to work out the data management section in a data management plan (DMP). This will help to think at an early stage of the project about the data will be collected and re-used and how these data will be safely stored during the research and how the data will be made Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) after the project.

New template as of 1 January 2020

In January 2020, NWO introduced a new data management plan template. This template is in line with Science Europe’s Core Requirements for Data Management Plans and defines a minimum set of questions that are to be addressed in the data management plan.

The project leader must submit the DMP to NWO no later than 4 months after the project has been awarded. NWO will approve the plan as soon as possible. The project will start as soon as NWO has approved the DMP. Preferably, the DMP is a living document and will be updated during the project.

Grants awarded from 1 January 2020

  • Please use the new NWO data management template, based on Science Europe’s Core Requirements for Data Management Plans.
  • We strongly advise project leaders to complete the data management plan through DMP-online, a web-based tool created by the Digital Curation Centre that helps to create, review, and share data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements.
  • Data management plans need to be completed in consultation with research data management support staff at the home institution of the grant holder. NWO strongly advises researchers to seek such support at an early stage. Plans that have not been consulted with institutional data management support staff will not be considered.
  • NWO reviews and approves data management plans according to a rubric.
  • Data management plans completed according to an institutional DMP template approved by NWO are also accepted.
