Taskforce for Applied Research SIA

In applied research, universities of applied sciences and public and private sector organisations work closely together aimed at improving professional practice and higher professional education. This enables the applied research performed by universities of applied sciences to make an important contribution to resolving social and economic issues. The Taskforce for Applied Research SIA is committed to promoting more and even better applied research by universities of applied sciences.

The Taskforce for Applied Research is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and is financed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

  • Funding for applied research

Taskforce for Applied Research SIA funding is available for researchers employed by Dutch Government funded universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands.

Taskforce for Applied Research SIA’s subsidies are only available in the Dutch language. Both the funding details on this website, the call for proposals and application forms for the various subsidies are in Dutch.

  • Networking organisation

Practice-oriented research contributes to solving social and economic issues. Our ambition is to better connect universities of applied sciences and these issues. As a network organisation, we connect people, organisations and policy. At national and regional level.

As a networking organisation, we work closely together with the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), SME Netherlands, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and the Chamber of Commerce.

  • Programmes

Among other things, we encourage the participation of universities of applied sciences in the National Science Agenda and the Mission-Driven Top Sectors and Innovation Policy. We also develop our own programmes that facilitate and support the strategic cooperation of universities of applied sciences with their regional and national partners.

  • Impact

Universities of applied sciences collaborate with each other and with other knowledge institutions such as national and international universities and knowledge institutes.

The research in and with professional practice generates knowledge and outcomes that are embedded in practice. The knowledge also flows into the curricula at the universities of applied sciences through the research groups, professors and teachers. We call this ‘impacting professional practice and education’, or ‘doorwerking’ in Dutch.

  • Strong position for applied research

Universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands carry out applied research which arises from issues or problems in practice. The outcomes of applied research are knowledge, greater understanding, prototypes, products and services that support innovation in professional practice and the solving of social issues. The research also strengthens the quality of higher vocational education.

  • Three roles

For the period 2023-2026, SIA has formulated ambitions linked to the 3 roles we want to play as a second-tier organisation:

    1.     funding applied research by universities of applied sciences
    2.     stimulating thematic cooperation
    3.     contributing to system development

On the basis of these roles, Regieorgaan SIA formulated 9 ambitions. These ambitions are described in Investeren in impact; Strategie 2023-2026 (in Dutch).
