Please note: The deadlines in the Call for Proposals (pdf) have not been updated. The call is open to full proposals.
Please note: A full application can only be submitted after submitting the letter of intent (deadline 26 August 2021). You will receive the form of the letter of intent with the advice of the pre-application phase. The application form for the full proposal is now available on the website (prepare tab).
Narrative curriculum vitae
NWO is going to introduce a uniform narrative curriculum vitae format in the upcoming Vici round. This measure dovetails with a new approach for recognising and rewarding scientists and follows on from the position paper Room for everyone’s talent, which NWO recently published with its partners. Moreover, NWO has had good experiences in recent years with the narrative CV in the pre-application pilot for the Veni in the NWO domains SSH, AES and ZonMw.
A uniform CV has several advantages: there are no longer any differences between the domains, and the CV is compatible with the principles of the DORA declaration which NWO recently signed. As a result, CVs will be assessed much more on their quality and (sustainable) impact than on their quantity and prestige.
What is going to change?
The application procedure itself will not change compared to Vici rounds in previous years. Only the format of the submitted CV will be adjusted, as part of the pre-application form of the Vici. The other items, such as a brief description of the research proposal and knowledge use, will obviously remain in force. The new narrative CV consists of two parts:
- Narrative academic profile: a narrative description of the candidate’s narrative profile. This enables candidates to decide what is/is not important to mention in their CV.
- Key output: a list of no more than 10 key outputs with a description of why the applicant considers this an important output. The presentation of research output will also take on a more narrative character. Candidates will no longer be asked for exhaustive publication lists. As a result, people on a dynamic career path will be given an equal opportunity.
Vici is a funding instrument from the Talent Scheme. It gives senior researchers the opportunity to build up their own research group, often in anticipation of a tenured professorship. The research group must become structurally embedded in the research institution.
Who can apply
Vici is targeted at outstanding senior researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers. Researchers who have obtained their PhD within the last 15 years can apply for a Vici grant. There may be a possibility of an extension in some cases like care responsibilities and/or training in a clinical specialism.

A researcher can submit a maximum of three Vici preproposals throughout his/her career.
What can be applied for
The maximum grant is 1.5 million euros.
When to apply
Due to a hack of the NWO networkserver the grant procedure has been at a standstill for five weeks from 13 February to 22 March 2021. The following new deadlines apply:
- Closing date for pre-registrations for the 2021 round is Thursday 29 April 2021, 14:00:00 (CEST).
- Closing date for the letter of intent to submit a full application is Thursday 26 August 2021 (CEST)
- Closing date for submitting full proposals is Tuesday 21 September 2021, 2:00 PM (CEST).
When you submit your application to ISAAC/Mijn ZonMw you need to enter several additional details online. Be aware that ZonMw applications are in a different format than of other domains. A larger part of the application must be entered online. An example of the digital form can be found here. We strongly advise you to start applying at least a day week before the deadline. Applications that are submitted after the deadline will not be included in the procedure.
All Vici applications are assessed in a nationwide competition.
The assessment criteria are:
- quality, innovative character and academic impact of the research proposal
- knowledge utilisation
- quality of the researcher
The Vici competition will be assessed by four committees: four committees corresponding to the NWO domains : Social Sciences and Humanities (SGW), NWO-Science domain (ENW), Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW), Health Research and Development (ZonMw).
Vici applications are assessed in a domain-wide competition: all applications from different disciplines within one domain will be compared in one competition. The domains use broad-based assessment committees of academics to advise on the merits and prioritisation of the applications.
Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal. These are assessed by one of the four assessment committees, which then makes a recommendation on whether or not to submit a full proposal. Full proposals are sent to external referees. Applicants are given the opportunity to respond to the referees’ reports (‘rebuttal’). Next, the full proposals, the reviews and the rebuttals are assessed by the respective assessment committees. They invite a selection of the candidates for an interview. Based on the application, the referees’ reports, the rebuttal and the interview the assessment committee advises the accredited board of NWO.
All proposals to the Health Research and Development domain (ZonMw) must be submitted by Mijn ZonMw.
You will find all of the documents that you need for your application here. Applications must be submitted through the ISAAC application and reporting system. If you do not have an ISAAC account yet, then please create one at least one workday in advance. More information about writing a proposal and which forms you need to use can be found below. Please download and use the forms below. For the Vici 2021 the Call for Proposal and the form preproposal are available on the website, so that applicants can prepare their application.
