  • NWO as employer

Promoting scientific research and increasing scientific and social impact – in short, what makes NWO successful – depends entirely on the dedication, quality, enthusiasm and commitment of our employees. NWO is an employer that gives its employees the space to optimally use and develop their talent, where trust, pride and pleasant cooperation are a priority. Every day, we work towards creating an inclusive environment where employees can develop their talent and feel valued and involved. A work environment where there is room for difference and everyone can excel and feel inspired and motivated.

As an organisation, NWO consists of two parts: a domain organisation (NWO-D) and an institute organisation (NWO-I). The institute organisation manages nine research institutes. The domain and institute organisations fall under the executive board. The units are located all over the country, with offices in The Hague and Utrecht. In total, NWO employs some 2,500 people (permanent and flexible employment), approximately 1,400 of whom are researchers at the NWO institutes. The roughly 600 NWO-D office staff in The Hague and Utrecht supervise and support the process of policy development and research funding. There are three closely linked domains: Applied and Engineering Sciences; Science; and Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition to the domains, NWO-D has two governing bodies: the Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO) and the Taskforce for Applied Research (SIA).

We are always on the lookout for academic and support staff (for example, financial, legal and HR), as well as communication and service facilities for NWO’s offices in The Hague and Utrecht.

    • Committed
We anticipate developments in science and society, and are closely linked to our own organisation and colleagues.

  • NWO and good employment practices

As a good employer, we offer our staff an attractive package of employment conditions.

We offer a range of training opportunities (through our NWO Academy, for example) to reinforce the skills required for your position. We also support you in shaping your career and honing your talent, and we enhance your career prospects by offering temporary secondments (internally and externally).

Moreover, we strongly value health and vitality, and encourage a healthy lifestyle by providing fitness options and free fruit in the office, for example. We also focus on achieving an optimal work-life balance for our employees.

  • Leadership at NWO

To achieve our ambitions, we need strong and inspiring managers who can respond quickly to external developments and ensure that NWO and the team adapt to them. We therefore have a leadership programme for managers to help them further develop their leadership skills.
