Technology Foundation STW

The NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) was formed in 2017 from the Technology Foundation STW. The roots of Technology Foundation STW lie in the Technical Physics and Innovation programme of the FOM Foundation (for the fundamental research of materials), at the end of the 1970s. In 1981, STW was officially established as a foundation to be able to serve the entirety of engineering sciences. The objective of the foundation since then has been the realisation of the transfer of knowledge from excellent technical-scientific research. Some years ago, the mission’s emphasis was changed to focus on the knowledge transfer between engineering sciences and users, in order to emphasise the role of the users in all AES projects. During research projects, users provide valuable advice and contribute their own knowledge, which can lead to a refinement of the research question. Ultimately, innovation – or, in AES terms, utilisation – is the result of the collective efforts of researchers and users.

From STW to AES

From 1 January 2017, the activities of the STW Foundation have been incorporated in the new NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES). This change is part of an NWO-wide transition.

Simon Stevin Awards

Through 2017, the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES, previously Technology Foundation STW) awarded annual prizes named after Simon Stevin. These awards honoured researchers for their combination of research and the valorisation of research results.
