NWO Institute NSCR: Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement

NSCR does fundamental scientific research into criminality and law enforcement. Our research is innovative, uses the latest methods and makes a contribution to major societal issues in the area of security and justice. The research programme sought answers to four key questions: Who commits which crime and why? Where, when and how are crimes committed? What are the consequences for victims and society? And how is criminality responded to and what are the effects of that?

NSCR operates at the interface of theory, practice and policy. We focus on traditional and new forms of criminality in which we test existing theories and develop new research instruments.

To remain relevant within international scientific research, we have set ourselves the following goals:

  • NSCR studies the interaction between criminality and law enforcement at a fundamental level and in an interdisciplinary manner with an emphasis on longitudinal research.
  • NSCR carries out scientific research independently and in collaboration with universities and research institutions, and publishes about this in scientific media.
  • In collaboration with universities and research institutions, NSCR is developing a national and international network of researchers by organising congresses, seminars, symposia, workshops and lectures.
  • NSCR plays a national and international active role in forming scientific and public opinion.
  • NSCR trains young researchers.

NSCR participates in the Amsterdam Law and Behavior Institute (A-LAB), an inter-faculty collaboration of VU Amsterdam.
