Bas Hensen wins NWO Physics Thesis Award
Quantum physics researcher Bas Hensen has won the 2017 NWO Physics Thesis Award with his doctoral thesis, Quantum Nonlocality with Spins in Diamond. Hensen's thesis describes the first ever demonstration of a 'loophole-free Bell Test'. Hensen wrote last year’s best physics dissertation and wins the 2017 award, together with a sum of €10,000. To reward exceptional scientific research by young researchers, in 2010 NWO inaugurated an annual NWO Physics Thesis Award. Hensen will receive the 2017 award on 23 January 2018 during the annual national physics congress, Physics@Veldhoven.

New: Heroes of Physics!
As we are curious about the people behind all the physics research done in The Netherlands, NWO came up with the Heroes of Physics idea. Every week, another physicist will take over the Heroes of Physics twitter account (@HeroesOfPhysics), telling about her or his work, posting photos and interacting with the followers. Marko Stamenkovic, PhD-student at Nikhef is our first hero. He started his PhD at Nikhef two months ago and is working for the ATLAS-experiment, working specifically on the Higgs.

Are you the next Hero of Physics?
If you want to be next, or know someone who would love to tweet about their work, kindly let us know at m.vanharderwijk@nwo.nl (@Mar10evH) or m.dekok@nwo.nl.

Please follow @HeroesOfPhysics on Twitter, for everything you always wanted to know about physicists but were afraid to ask!

Second Computational Sciences for Future Energy Conference presented a broad range of topics
"Predictions about the performance of wind turbines are still underwhelming at this time. We need numerical models to accurately calculate every variable,” explains Fernando Porté-Agel, one of the keynote speakers at the 2017 Computational Sciences for Future Energy Conference which was held on 19 and 20 September in Eindhoven. Anwesha Bose (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Monika Dash (University of Twente) gave the best pitch and poster presentation.

Meet Marjolein Robijn
As of 1 April 2017, Marjolein Robijn is the director of Life Sciences within the NWO Domain Science (ENW). She did her PhD research in the Parasitology Department of Leiden University, where she used mass spectrometry to study glycans and glycoproteins of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. Robijn: 'If you work for NWO, you contribute to facilitating and optimising the scientific landscape. How nice is that? That is what I think about when I get up every day. We can make the difference.'

"Where do we want to be with the planet 20 years from now?" Interview Sandeep Jain
Sandeep Jain is back in Bangalore. Since early August he has been working in Shell's computational chemistry group in that city. He was the first of 75 PhD students from India to have completed his doctoral research – in just 3.5 years – within the Computational Sciences for Energy Research (CSER) programme (a partnership between NWO and Shell).

New calls and prizes

Stevin Prize: new science award for valorization
The Stevin Prize is a new award for a top researcher or a team of two to three researchers with international reputations. In essence the prize works as an impulse for scientific research and knowledge exchange and impact for society. Nomination can only take place at the invitation of NWO. A maximum of two prizes are awarded annually, at the same time as the Spinoza research prize. The laureates each receive 2.5 million euro.

Start Pilot Industrial Doctorates to facilitate doing a PhD in industry
NWO started the pilot programme Industrial Doctorates. This programme is aimed at facilitating collaboration between knowledge institutions and industry, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular. Within the programme, a candidate PhD student carries out his or her research at both the knowledge institution and the participating company. The call is open to researchers from all scientific fields, in collaboration with companies. Deadline: 16 January 2018.

Research programme DeepNL: underground in the Netherlands
Gaining a better understanding of the consequences of human interventions underground. By the end of 2017 NWO will open a call for the new research programme DeepNL. This is a long-term research programme on the influence of human interventions deep under the ground. With this programme NWO is responding to the advice of the Dutch Safety Board to ensure a structural and long-term research programme into the problems related to gas extraction in the province of Groningen. The programme budget consists of contributions of NAM and NWO and an economic priority area allowance.

Launch of the 12th Joint Call ERA-NET Bioenergy /2nd Additional Joint Call BESTF3
On 10 October the 12th call of the ERA-NET Bioenergy was opened with the theme ‘Biomass as an important pillar within energy systems and the circular economy’. Dutch funding is via the Renewable Energy regulations (Hernieuwbare Energieregeling). That means that tenders for projects with Dutch involvement must be directed exclusively towards projects within one of the SDE+ categories (electricity generation, heat, green gas). The Call Text has been published on the ERA-NET Bioenergy website. A networking webinar will be held on 29 November.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 ‘marks completely new way of listening to the universe’
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 has been awarded to Rainer Weiss (one half) and to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne (who share the other half), all three members of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, for ‘their decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the detection of gravitational waves’. Physicists at Nikhef have made important contributions to the instrumentation and data analysis for this research.

LIGO and Virgo make first detection of gravitational waves produced by colliding neutron stars
For the first time, scientists have directly detected gravitational waves — ripples in space and time — in addition to light from the spectacular collision of two neutron stars. This marks the first time that a cosmic event has been viewed in both gravitational waves and light. The discovery was made using the U.S.-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO); the Europe-based Virgo detector; and some 70 ground- and space-based observatories.

Innovative control system paves the way for large scale universal quantum computing
Future quantum computers promise exponential scaling in computing power with linearly increasing number of qubits. However, harnessing this power is challenging due to the complexity of controlling a large number of qubits simultaneously. A solution to this problem has been engineered by Richard Versluis, principal scientist at TNO, Leo DiCarlo, associate professor at TU Delft and postdoc Stefano Poletto with support of colleagues from TNO and TU Delft at QuTech and Intel. They invented a control methodology for fault-tolerant quantum computing based on a basic building block of eight qubits with a fixed set of control hardware. This basic building block can be reproduced to large arrays of qubits, without any increase or changes to the control hardware.
