For ERA-Chemistry ten national research organisations have joined forces for inplementing a European subsidy instrument in the chemical sciences. Originating in the organisation ‘Chairpersons and Directors of European Research Councils' Chemistry Committees’ (CERC3), ten partners within the Sixth Framework Programme of the EC have jointly received an ERA-NET subsidy for creating a network.
The aim of the ERA-Chemistry network is to develop a bottom-up European Research Area (ERA) in science-driven chemical research, unhindered by national, formal or scientific boundaries. The network identifies innovative scientific subjects that are exceptionally suited for being studied in joint, cooperative, transnational, European research projects. The Dutch partner in ERA-Chemistry is NWO via the Chemical Sciences Division. The other partners are organisations and governments from Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. More information on ERA-Chemistry can be found at the website www.erachemistry.net.
When can be applied
This subsidy is now closed for applications. The first Call for proposals was held in 2005, the next one is planned in 2007.
Extra Information
In December 2005 the first ERA-Chemistry Call was rounded off. The
scientific subject of this first call was Hierarchically organised chemical
structures: from molecules to hybrid materials. The submitted joint
research proposals came from at least two and at most three applicants, with
all applicants originating in a different country participating in
ERA-Chemistry. The call was specifically designed to attract new cooperative
projects, which meant that the applicants had not produced any joint
publications over the previous five years. In addition one of the general
conditions for submission was that the corresponding applicant must be a
‘junior’ researcher (graduation date no further back than 10 years). Per
project at most one ‘senior’ researcher could submit a research proposals als a
co-applicant.
A total of 82 preregistrations were submitted, of which 35
were invited to be worked up into full research proposals. After a second
assessment round by a scientific panel 9 transnational research proposals were
approved. More information about the exact terms and the approved projects of
the first ERA-Chemistry Call can be found at the website.
Committees
The assessment for the first ERA-Chemistry Call of 2005 was carried out by a committee of 15 international scientific experts.
Budget
3 million euro for the management of ERA-Chemistry. The budget for the 2005 Call was 2.4 million euro.
Financiers
The programme management is financed by the EC (KP6), the budget for the research projects is provided by the individual national funding organisations that participate.
