Samenvatting
Starting from the late 1980s, European and American literature, art and philosophy present a crescent plea for a move away from postmodernism's purportedly radical irony. This appeal also marks contemporary Russian literature, with several writers propagating a "neo-sentimentalist" substitute for postmodernism.

In American and Western-European literature, similar tendencies repeatedly drew academic attention; but detailed scholarly discussion of Russian neo-sentimentalism lacks until today. This study changes that situation. More specifically, it links the shift from postmodernism towards neo-sentimentalism to the political transition of late-1980s-Russia. Russian writers then confronted a radically new political reality, in which a free market replaced Soviet communism. I propose that their allegedly strictly literarily motivated desire for a "neo-sentimentalism" is in fact tightly linked to socio-economic factors, such as the need for a broad audience. This link will be explored through analyses of three "neo-sentimentalist" authors: Vladimir Sorokin, Timur Kibirov and Dmitrii Vodennikov. Juxtaposing these authors' texts and auto-comments to their social and economical behaviour, this project serves two targets. Firstly, it points to cultural diversification within the international "new sincere" reaction to postmodernism; and secondly, it highlights the sparsely studied link between literarily defined protests against postmodernism and the socio-economic reality in which these protests arise.
