Summary
To investigate local climate changes it is required to couple local numerical models with a very high resolution (grid point distances less than 2 km) to global climate models (resolutions at best 20 km within a few years). However, the computational demands of the local model are so huge, that it has to be on a very limited domain. The effect of this limitation in domain size is that the lateral boundaries are close to the area of interest. To avoid a negative impact of the lateral boundaries on the reliablity of the simulation, a good formulation of the lateral boundary conditions is required.

The proposed research is to formulate and implement good lateral boundary conditions, both mathematically ("well-posed") and meteorologically (i.e., properly transferring information from the global into the local domain). The reseach should result in a production code, implying that the code implements the developed algorithms efficiently on massively parallel and/or GRID computers.We will develop new coupling schemes with lateral boundary conditions based on a weak formulation of the model equations. This makes resolutions upto 2 km realistic. Automatic code generation techniques will be adapted to include these new coupling schemes, and be applied to generate efficient codes for the new schemes.
