Samenvatting
Scholarly study of theology in its interactions with the natural sciences has flourished in English language areas since 1966. On the European continent there is considerable ambivalence about the import of Anglo-Saxon discussions, especially regarding their theological and epistemological assumptions. In reverse, continental Europeans might be seen as not getting beyond the prolegomena to come to deal with scientific insights. Furthermore, quite a few systematic theologians and philosophers of religion seem to be critical of the 'theology and science' discussion, which to a large extent is initiated and carried out by scientists who have moved into theological discussions. The relatively limited interaction between academic theology and 'theology and science' is not only an observation about different scholarly communities, but also seems to reflect differences in views of underlying issues, such as the understandings of religion and science involved. The ambition that drives the current proposal is to understand the regional variation in 'theology and science' and the lack of interaction between theology and 'theology and science' as a reflection of underlying views of the nature and situation of theology, religion, and science. The hope is that such clarification might contribute to a philosophically and theologically competent and fruitful development of 'theology and science'. Three sub-projects are envisaged, namely an analysis of classifications of the relationships between theology and science, a study of variety in contributions to 'theology and science', and an analysis of the interactions (or lack thereof) between studies in systematic theology and philosophy of religion and 'theology and science'.
