A long-term compass for the protection of global biodiversity

Samenvatting

Human impact on the natural environment is significant and growing, causing changes in biodiversity that have been more rapid in the past 50 years than at any time before in human history. At various meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the European Union and the G8, concern has been expressed about the lack of both financial resources and financial incentives to implement national biodiversity strategies and action plans. Consequently, there has been an urgent international call for the development of economic instruments for the protection of biodiversity. As yet, however, hardly any ideas have been developed on effective, efficient and fair global economic instruments.
The overall aim of this research is to develop such instruments by pursuing three key objectives, divided over three research projects:
1. development of an indicator for biodiversity as a leverage point for global economic instruments;
2. development of economic instruments for the protection of global biodiversity;
3. development of moral principles for international allocation of responsibilities (burden-sharing) to protect global biodiversity.
This project is unique in at least two ways. First, in explicitly investigating the ideal long-term situation, where other research primarily focuses on short-term opportunities. Second, in its multidisciplinary approach, by truly integrating ecology, economics and moral philosophy. The research projects will be carried out in conjunction with one another, with each project guiding the others by offering insights and boundary conditions, instead of adding separate results at the end.
The output will be two PhD theses, various articles in the peer-reviewed international literature, a synthesis monograph and various reports for policy-makers, in particular those involved in the 11th (2012) and 12th (2014) meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The CBD secretariat and Dutch government support this project."
