Experiences of WOTRO researchers in their Ph.D. or postdoc projects
In 2008, anthropologist Hilde Geerling started her PhD research within the WOTRO Integrated Programme “Linking food aid and food security in Ethiopia”. This programme is coordinated by Professor Thea Hilhorst (WUR) and Dr. Jemberu Tedla (Bahir Dar University) and belongs to the research groups of Disaster Studies and Law and Governance. Call for Vici proposals
The forms and instructions for Vici applications in 2011 are now available on the web. You may submit your application to one of the eight NWO divisions or, in case of an interdivisional application, to WOTRO. We encourage researchers who address development oriented research issues to apply to the appropriate NWO division. Deadline for submissions is 31 March 2011, 23:59 hrs CET. Read more...
Call for proposals: Antimicrobial Resistance in developing countries
Beginning on 1 March, researchers are invited to submit grant proposals for the ZonMw-programme Priority Medicines Antimicrobial Resistance. WOTRO contributes € 390.000 to this call to support research on antimicrobial resistance with relevance for development countries. Deadline for submissions is 26 April 2011, 15:00 hrs CET. Cooperation China: Call for Joint Research Projects
NWO has a cooperation agreement with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in Beijing. The current call for joint research projects focuses on 5 themes within the field of Plant Developmental Biology. Eligible research teams are composed of Dutch and Chinese researchers, with active involvement of a senior Principal Investigator on both the Chinese and the Dutch side. The ‘Academische Jaarprijs’ (Academic Year-award) offers a price of € 100,000 for the team with the most creative communication plan to make academic research accessible to the general public. Eligible teams are offered a communication lecture, which will take place at 20 April. We encourage WOTRO researchers to apply and to show the importance of addressing development issues in academic research. Deadline for proposals is 4 April, 2011. Read more...(Dutch only)
| GHPHS: Second call for preliminary proposals still open This second call within the Global Health Policy and Health Systems programme will focus on health policy research. Emphasis is on topics such as leadership and governance, as well as MDG5: improving maternal health. Initiatives from researchers from low-income countries (LICs) in collaboration with Dutch partners (i.e. based in the Netherlands) are highly welcome and LIC researchers may act as main applicant. IIASA offers scholarships for postdocs
IIASA is accepting on-line applications for the 2011 Postdoctoral Program, which provides young scholars two years of hands-on professional experience in an international scientific environment near Vienna, Austria. Candidates are expected to conduct their own research within one of IIASA’s programs, so candidates should submit a proposal that connects their work with IIASA’s agenda. Call for collaborative projects on Sustainable Crop Production In a move to harness science to improve food security for millions of people in the developing world, DFID, BBSRC, Gates Foundation and the government of India have announced a new £20M/$32M joint research initiative. The focus of the programme is on research to understand and counter the effects of abiotic and biotic stresses that constrain food crop production in developing countries of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Linking & learning at the DPRN closing event
To mark its closure, the Development Policy Review Network (DPRN) organised its final event entitled ‘Linking to Learn & Learn from Linking’ on 18 February. The event was aimed at exchanging experiences related to efforts of DPRN to enhance cooperation between scientists, policymakers, NGO staff and business people. Participants recommended that further cooperation between these various constituencies of development experts should be stimulated. DPRN website.
Vici for Erwin Bulte
WOTRO board member Erwin Bulte received a Vici grant. Bulte, Professor of Development Economics at Wageningen University, received the grant to analyse the effects of societal interventions in African villages on agricultural development. With three PhD candidates and a postdoc, he will study the effects of interventions in hundreds of communities in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Burundi. Villages that don't receive any help will also be monitored.

Launch NWO theme Connecting Sustainable Cities The new NWO theme Connecting Sustainable Cities covers the challenges in areas such as water security, congestion, spatial coherence and governance. These challenges are introduced by the growing amounts of people living in cities. The United Nations predicts that in 2050, about 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas (compared to 50% nowadays). NICIS and several Dutch ministries are partners of NWO in the theme. Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation tool for research capacity strengthening activities
The ESSENCE on Health Research initiative facilitated a harmonization process to develop a Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Framework (PM&E Framework). This tool can be used to plan, monitor or evaluate research capacity strengthening activities of programmes or collaborations. WOTRO is an active member of the steering committee of ESSENCE. The latter has the vision to impact policies and practices of funders and to reduce burden on and alignment with partner investigators, institutions and countries. Africa Yearbook
The Africa Yearbook covers major domestic political developments, the foreign policy and socio-economic trends in sub-Sahara Africa – all related to developments in one calendar year. Six editions of the yearbook are now freely available online until 28 February 2011. Read more...
'Silverlining Africa' - Inaugural lecture by Ton Dietz
Economically, Africa is on the rise, as appears from both research carried out among African people and the analysis of statistical data. Professor Ton Dietz (ASC) addressed the issue in his inaugural lecture of 14 January. His lecture can be found on the website of the ASC.
