Young ethnic minority scientists receive PhD grants

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded 19 ethnic minority graduates a grant from the Mosaic programme. With this funding, the budding young and talented scientists can carry out PhD research for a period of four years. 

Each laureate will receive 200,000 euros for PhD research at a university. That amount will be financed jointly by NWO and the Ministry for Education, Culture and Science.

More variation

With Mosaic, NWO wishes to attract more graduates from minority groups into scientific research. NWO hopes that the approved candidates will also remain active in the Dutch science sector in the longer term and that they will fill an exemplary role from that position.

The Mosaic grant winners are ambitious young scientists. Many of them have already won awards or have co-authored scientific publications during their studies. The laureates come from a range of countries including Suriname, Indonesia, Iran and Iraq.

A total of 156 students and graduates responded to a call for research proposals. The best candidates were invited to attend NWO workshops and to work up and present their research ideas to an evaluating committee. Nineteen of the 44 full proposals will be awarded a grant.

Festive award ceremony

At an award ceremony on 17 October 2011, the 19 laureates will receive a diploma from Prof. Jos Engelen, chair of NWO. The ceremony will be held at the NWO offices.
