Bloedplaatjes spelen een centrale rol bij leverregeneratie. Daarnaast zijn er aanwijzingen dat ze de groei van bepaalde soorten kanker stimuleren. Onduidelijk is of bloedplaatjes ook een rol spelen in de progressie van levercelkanker. In dit project zal de rol van bloedplaatjes bij groei en uitzaaiing van levercelkanker worden onderzocht.

Resetting a mistaken immune system

The immune system is meant to protect. Sometimes it makes mistakes attacking your body, like the joints. In children this leads to joint inflammation. Only some children get better with medication. We aim to find out how their immune system either resets or fails to do so.

Antisocial behavior in children often seems quite innocent. However, some antisocial children grow up to be serious criminals. The researchers will investigate whether dysfunctions in fear and reward-related brain areas may put antisocial children at risk for persistent antisocial behaviour.

Aderverkalking in beeld: zin of onzin?

Hart- en vaatziekten zijn de belangrijkste oorzaak van morbiditeit en mortaliteit wereldwijd. Met behulp van Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) zal bij patiënten met vaatlijden de uitgebreidheid, progressie en prognostische waarde van aderverkalking in de kransslagaders en grote lichaamsslagaders worden onderzocht.

After a heart attack, heart muscle dies, which leads to heart failure. By reprogramming cells into heart cells, we hope to generate viable heart tissue, that can ultimately be transplanted into diseased hearts.
Pancreatic cancer: fast predator

Pancreatic cancer with locally advanced growth has no treatment. Patients die within six months. Radiofrequency ablation is a technique that burns cancer cells. In liver tumours it is used successfully. This project will study this new treatment in the pancreas.
Do Chinese Judges Make Law?

Heup- en knieprothesen vormen een veelgebruikte, effectieve behandeling van artrose in oudere patiënten. Het is een ingrijpende operatie, die soms fataal kan aflopen. Dit Europese onderzoek ontwikkelt een methode om het overlijdensrisico van deze patiënten te kunnen voorspellen.
Hersenmechanismen bij vermijdingsleren in sociale fobie

Sociale fobie is de meest voorkomende angststoornis en gaat gepaard met ernstige beperkingen. Vermijdingsgedrag is dé aanhoudende factor van sociale fobie. Dit project onderzoekt de hersenmechanismen die betrokken zijn bij vermijdingsleren in sociaal angstigen en hoe vermijdingsleren beïnvloed kan worden.

Discriminatie komt voor, maar vaak ontbreken harde bewijzen. Hoe kan het Europese Mensenrechtenhof dan accuraat vaststellen of discriminatie plaatsvond? Is het huidige bewijsstelsel geen obstakel voor de effectieve bescherming van kwetsbare groepen? Met rechtsvergelijkend onderzoek worden alternatieven in kaart gebracht.

Standards across borders: phantom or reality?

Bijwerkingen van het levenslang gebruik van afweeronderdrukkende medicijnen belemmeren het succes van orgaantransplantatie. Intraveneuze immunoglobulinen (IVIg) zijn een veilig alternatief, hiervan bestaat echter een tekort. De onderzoeker gaat de actieve component in IVIg identificeren, wat het namaken ervan mogelijk zal maken.
