Humiliation in Conflictual Intergroup Contexts: Causes, Experiences and Consequences

Aanvrager: Dr. K.J. Jonas (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

Samenvatting
Humiliation at the group level can be a severe obstacle in intergroup relations in a multicultural society such as the Netherlands. Central to this most negative form of outgroup derogation is the potential for reverse humiliation to fight back. Such escalation spirals, potentially supercharged by international policies such as the 'war on terror', stand in the way of integration and a peaceful living together. This research investigates the causes, experiences and consequences of humiliation for both minority and majority groups in the Netherlands. Results can be used to channel intergroup interaction in conflictuous contexts.
