Abstract
This project examines street demonstrations through the lens of cleavage theory; why people protest (or not) and by which organizations they are mobilised (or not) relates to cleavages socio-political conflicts reflect. Various levels of conflicts are analysed with a multilevel dataset of 100 demonstrations in 6-10 countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, UK, Sweden, proposals to expand the dataset with Germany, France, Italy and USA are submitted and under review) encompassing data on mobilizing actors, participants, and socio-political context.
