Empowering paramedics in bystander conflict

Samenvatting
Dutch media increasingly report on conflicts between paramedics and bystanders during emergency events. Bystander conflicts, defined as a paramedics perception that a bystander frustrates her or his task and/or goal accomplishment, are likely to interfere with effective performance, thereby endangering patient safety. The proposed research examines how specific work characteristics influence paramedics perception of intrusions and how those affect performance. We argue that both individual and team resources are key to reduce the negative effects of bystander conflict. Interventions to promote paramedics effectiveness and well-being are developed and evaluated.
