Why the Dutch don't talk rights: universal human rights as a framework for the resolution of societal conflicts in the Netherlands
Aanvrager: Prof. mr. dr. B.M. Oomen (Roosevelt Academy)
Samenvatting
Whilst universal human rights feature prominently in Dutch foreign policy, they play smaller role in the domestic framing of conflict. This project explores and explains this paradox and its consequences. Explanatory variables include the monist legal system, the institutional landscape, the role of jurists and ngo's and local conceptions of citizenship. Case studies -Wilders, the mothers of Srebrenica, the rights of others, Zierikzee - illustrate the consequences at hand. The project aims to establish the conditions under which 'rights talk' could play a larger role in conflict resolution in the Netherlands, and to contribute to the comparative sociology of rights.
