A fractured nation: Identity subversion and national identification

Applicant: Prof. dr. M.J.A.M. Verkuyten (University Utrecht)

Abstract
This Netherlands has increasingly become a 'fractured nation' involved in heated debates about what it means to be Dutch and about the need for national commitments and a sense of belonging. This project focuses on the relationship between perceived identity subversion and national identification among native Dutch and Turkish-Dutch participants. There are four research questions: (1) are perceptions of identity subversion associated with lower national identification? To what extent is this relationship (2) mediated by self-related uncertainty, and (3), for the native Dutch, moderated by 'primordial autochthony', and (4), for the Turkish-Dutch, moderated by perceived voice and social influence?
