A call for proposals was launched in the end of 2008. On basis of the assessment by an international panel of experts and the recommendation of the AbF programme committee, the Steering Committee of Sustainable Earth and the SPIN committee have decided to approve funding for three proposals for integrated projects with a budget of almost €700.000 each. Two of the projects deal with the biodiesel crop Jatropha, and the third with oil palms.

The following programmes have been awarded:

• JARAK: the commodization of an alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia (Jatropha)
• Breaktroughs in biofuels: mobile technology for biodiesel production from Indonesian resources
• Sliding from greasy land? Migration flows and forest transformation caused by palm oil expansion in Riau, Sumatra and Berau, East Kalimantan
