Research Group “Interactions Civil society and Markets” International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, The Hague

The research group “Interactions Civil Society and Markets” has its main focus on the understanding of the changing roles of civil society organisations in general and development oriented NGOs in particular, in achieving sustainable economic development and income poverty reduction in the South.
This research takes place against the background of rapidly changing societal configurations of state, civil society and market and associated processes of (dis)embedding and hybridisation. Four areas of research can be identified:
a) The roles of development oriented NGOs in income poverty reduction under conditions of liberalisation and hybridisation,
b) The rise of private sector based NGOs and sustainable economic development,
c) Corporate responsibility, sustainable development and poverty reduction, and
d) Ways in which public policies co-shape and influence interactions between civil society and markets.

In addition Prof. Patricia Almeida Ashley of the Federal University of Sao Joao del Rei, Brasil who has recently been appointed in the Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity 2009-2011 has joined the group.
