Cees Veerman joins NWO Governing Board

Prof. C.P. Veerman has been appointed a member of the Governing Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The professor and former government minister has been appointed with effect from 1 November 2009.
Veerman is professor of Sustainable Rural Development at Tilburg University and Wageningen University and Research Centre. He is a familiar face at NWO. Until July 2009 he chaired the meta-evaluation committee Quality Assurance in Scientific Research (NWO, KNAW, VSNU). With his appointment NWO is consolidating its societal and political links. Chair Jos Engelen: 'NWO's mission is to facilitate excellent research for the benefit of science and society. With Veerman we have taken on board a very experienced administrator in these areas. He possesses the ideal qualities to help safeguard and direct NWO's mission.'
Cees Veerman was the Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries from 2002 to 2007. Besides his professorship he is a member of various supervisory boards, such as that of Knowledge for Climate, and he is also chair of various organisations, including Natuurmonumenten (nature conservation organisation).
Since 1 November 2009, the Governing Board members are: Prof. Jos Engelen (chair), Prof. Charles Buys, Prof. Franciska de Jong, Prof. Ben de Kruijff and Prof. Cees Veerman. The General Director of NWO, Dr Cees de Visser, is secretary to the Governing Board.
