Afternoon discussion: Mathematics, Computer Science and Climate Research

10 januari 2005

Date: Monday January 10th 2005

Start: 13:30h

Location: Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI), room Z009. Address: Kruislaan 413, 1098 SJ, Amsterdam.

Organized by: NWO Research Councils for Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) and Physical Sciences (EW), in cooperation with the Climate Variability programme committee.

The goal of this afternoon discussion is to stimulate and enhance the cooperation between researchers in the field of mathematics, computer science and climate research. An overview of the open questions on the interfaces of these disciplines will be given in two presentations, one from the point of view of climate science and the other from the point of view of mathematics and computer science. The discussion forum is open to input from all participants and will address questions as for example “How can these different fields of research learn more from each other and together tackle new scientific questions? “Which specific subjects could benefit most from joint research efforts?” This meeting is also a first invitation for researchers in these disciplines to su bmit a joint proposal in the coming round of the NWO-ALW and EW Climate Variability programme, scheduled for spring 2005. The chairman of the programme committee will introduce the focus and restrictions of this n ew call for proposals.

Programme:

13:30-13:45 Introduction by chairman of the Climate Variability programme committee, Gerrit Burgers (KNMI)
13:45-14:15   Mathematical and Computational Challenges in Climate Dynamics, Henk Dijkstra (Colorado State University, US)
14:25-14:55 Transient dynamics, multiple scales and geometric integration, Jan Verwer (Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica - CWI)
15:05-15:30 Coffee break
15:30-16.30    Discussion forum, lead by Will de Ruijter (Utrecht University – Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research - IMAU)
16:30-17:30   Drinks

Registration: Before Tuesday January 4, 2005 by e-mail to walgreen@nwo.nl. Please give your name, title, institute and suggestions for topics to be discussed in the forum (e.g. research topics on the interface of the mathematics, computer science and climate science).
