Objective

In recent years, two research programmes were started by the Netherlands with a focus on health research in developing countries:

  • Health Research in Developing Countries: executed by NWO-WOTRO in the framework of the NWO 'Knowledge Enriches' incentive.
  • Ghanaian-Dutch Programme for Health Research: executed by the Health Research Unit of the Ghanaian Ministry of Health. The programme mainly focuses on small research projects with a geographic focus on Ghana and several thematic priorities identified in participatory workshops with local stakeholders.

For more information, please visit the programme website: http://www.partn ership-programmes.org/hrp/html/home.html

Following a mutual desire to establish formal cooperation between the two programmes, the committees of both programmes have decided to engage in joint research activities aimed at creating added value and sharing of expertise.

The aims of this joint effort are

  • to encourage cooperative health research between groups from Ghana and the Netherlands, and
  • to initiate scientific research at the PhD and post-doctorate level focused on several public health issues of local priority Ghana, as defined by the Ghanaian-Dutch Programme for Health Research.
