New Call for Social Science Exchange Visits with India

The third Call for Exchange Visits between India and The Netherlands has been launched by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), with a deadline of 18 May 2010. This joint Scholar Exchange Scheme is aimed at staff with an academic or research appointment, up to senior professors, with a clear preference for young scholars.

Tracking Development Falsification Award: € 5000,-

Tracking Development is a multilateral, international research project on the comparative development trajectories of Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa over the last 50 years. The project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and executed by the African Studies Centre and the KITLV in Leiden.

Successful Careers for Energy Researchers

In 2009 the Energy Research Stimulation programme of NWO/SenterNovem was completed. It is currently being evaluated. Prior to the full evaluation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) held a short e-mail questionnaire among several former PhD students of this programme.

Important role parents on problem behavior adolescent

A considerable portion of the Dutch youth develops problem behaviour during adolescence. Factors such as character, family situations and relationships with peers can influence the development of aggressive behaviour or feelings of depression. Remedial educationist Miranda Sentse has carried out research into the influence of social environments on problem behaviour. It turns out that parents play an important role.

Some tropical tree species grow faster than before

By performing tree ring analysis, WOTRO researcher Danaë Rozendaal studied the long-term tree growth patterns of tropical trees. She showed that growth rates of trees gradually increased in the past two centuries.

Farmers drive deforestation in Rondonia, in the Brazilian Amazon

Small-scale farmers who lease land from the Brazilian government are largely responsible for deforestation in the Brazilian state of Rondonia in the Amazon area. In most areas with agrarian projects, more than fifty percent of the land has been cleared of forests.
