European Young Investigators (EURYI)

Secretariat : NWO
Participants : ALW, CW, EW, GW, MaGW, ZonMw, N, STW
Apply : No, the subsidy is closed for applications

Objective

The European Young Investigators (EURYI) Awards are an initiative of 21 European Union Research Organisations from 16 countries, thus contributing to the creation of the European Research Area. The aim of the EURYI Awards is to enable and encourage outstanding young researchers from all over the world to work in an European environment for the benefit of the development of European science and for building up the next generation of leading European researchers. Due to great interest in the scheme, the rate of success is expected to be very slim (ca. 3 per cent).

Application

Who can apply

In 2006, NWO selected the candidates. Universities and institutions allowed to participate in the Vernieuwingsimpuls were asked to submit names of suitable candidates. NWO selected names of researchers who already participated in one of its competitions. This means that no applications could be submitted unless you were invited to do so.

For all selected candidates the restriction applied that they had to have obtained their doctorate after 29 November 1998 and before 1 December 2004.
Applicants had an excellent track record with the potential to become world class leaders in their respective field of research.

What can be applied for

Salary and research costs for a 5 year period, with a maximum of 250,000 Euro per year.

When can be applied

The 2006 round was the last EURYI round. The programme is no longer open for application.

Extra Information

Applications by selected candidates were submitted to the NWO Division which invited the candidate. A signed advance guarantee of the host institution was required.

Budgets followed the same guidelines as those for the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme ('Vernieuwingsimpuls'). Except:

  • no financial contribution of the host institution is required
  • applications in the field of Technical Sciences (to be assessed by STW) do not need a section on utilisation

Application for both a Vernieuwingsimpuls and EURYI grant at the same time was allowed. However, applicants forfeited their Vernieuwingsimpuls award, irrespective of its evaluation, as soon as they were granted a EURYI Award.

Applicants should be full time available for research without further educational assignments.
