What is the NWO Theme Nanosciences

Permanent monitoring of glucose levels in diabetics using sensors implanted in the body is one of the spectacular applications which are becoming possible thanks to the nano-sciences, the domain of the minutely small.

One nanometre measures one billionth of a metre, and the scale at which nano-science operates is the scale of individual atoms and molecules.

This enables many instruments to be made which require a minimum of energy, material and space. Nano-science can therefore not only make a key contribution to the early identification of diseases (such as cancer), but also to the development of sustainable technology.
