The mission of the Research Council incorporates the following elements:

• Financing excellent scientific research
• Developing research directions via subsidies, research programmes and research agendas
• Stimulating multidisciplinary and international cooperation
• Creating career opportunities for talented researchers

NWO lines of action 

NWO has drawn up a plan of action to give the Netherlands a leading position in science in Europe within ten years by appointing lines of actions. The strategy of the division of Physical Sciences is based on these three lines of action:

• opportunities for researchers
• consolidating strenghts
• science for society

NWO themes 

NWO themes are intended to create focus and mass. They cover multidisciplinary research programmes in subjects that are scientifically and/or socially current issues. The division of Physical Sciences leads the following themes:

• Dynamics of Complex Systems
• Knowledge Base for ICT Applications
